So how is it with you? The Word of God is designed to be our Divine instructor. As our Divine Teacher, we sit in His classroom as He asks us:

 

• Is my Word at work ADMONISHING YOU? Psalm 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. (KJV); 1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition (nous = mind + tithemi = lay upon), upon whom the ends of the world are come. (KJV)
• Is my Word at work QUICKENING YOU?  Psalm 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. (NKJV)
• Is my Word at work COMFORTING YOU?  Psalm 119:82 Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me? (KJV)

• Is my Word at work PRODUCING HOPE IN YOU? Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (KJV)
• Is my Word at work CLEANING YOUR HEART? Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, (KJV)

Is my Word at work PROMOTING SPIRITUAL GROWTH? 1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (KJV) (Congo).

So how do we adopt Ezra’s strategy? Here are so elements to practice getting alone with God.

• START WITH HIM: Try to spend at least 12 minutes each day in reading God’s Word and seeking to find one truth to hold on to all day long.
• SPEAK WITH HIM: From that time alone with God, think through your entire day. Ask HIM what would be the best use of your life for this day.
• STOP WITH HIM: Try to also get in the habit of a weekly time of evaluation. Just a half hour reflecting on where you are, and where you are headed in life and ministry.
• STAY WITH HIM: Finally, try one time of strategic planning each month, to truly reflect on life for a couple of hours. Take a spiritual retreat. Sit with a pad of paper, your calendar, and an open Bible. List your priorities for the next month. Pray over them, change them, decide upon them and then do them.

 

Psalm 119 is a Psalm or song written by God to summarize the power and purpose of His Word. Longer than all but three of Paul’s epistles – we have a book within a book, by the Author of the Book about the Book of Books!

 

Psalm 119 is a call by the Lord to each of us – to unleash His Word into our lives today.

As we open to the 119^th Psalm this morning, we open to the greatest commentary ever written on the Bible.

 

 

TESTIMONIES: When His Word is filling our lives we are Listening to the Divine Witness testifying to the Truth that is sure & makes wise. (23x) There is only person that knows your future. There is only one map that leads to the right destination. There is only one witness that will always tell you the truth about your origin, your purpose, and your destiny. And that One is here and His record is in this book – God’s Word ! Psalm 119:2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart! 24 Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors. 46 I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings, And will not be ashamed. 59 I thought about my ways, And turned my feet to Your testimonies.

COMMANDS: When His Word is filling our lives we are Obeying the Divine Orders/Decrees of our Heavenly Captain that are perfectly pure and which enlightens our lives. (22x) Psalm 119:6 Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments. 10 With my whole heart I have sought You;  Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! 19 I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me. 35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.

WORD: When His Word is filling our lives we are Reading the Divine Word to obtain the Will of God.  (19x) Psalm 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. 38 Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You.  41 Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord— Your salvation according to Your word.

LAW: When His Word is filling our lives we are Receiving Divine Instructions  from the Ultimate Teacher giving Perfect Instructions that restores & transforms (Congo) (25x) Psalm 119:1  Blessed   are the undefiled in the way,  who walk  in the law of the LORD. 18 Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.  34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole  heart. 44 So shall I keep Your law continually, Forever and ever.

JUDGMENTS: When His Word is filling our lives we are Building Life upon the Unchanging Decrees of God’s Divine Decisions that are always true & vindicates. (23x)  (Wm. Borden) changing jobs, changing weather, upgrading, latest edition, newest version…

RIGHTEOUS: When His Word is filling our lives we are Acting upon the Divine Righteousness that Balances all of Life. (12x)

STATUTES: When His Word is filling our lives we are Using the Divine Plans or specs to build the Ultimate Life. (22x) Isaiah 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.

WORD: When His Word is filling our lives we are Hearing the Divine Voice walking us all the way through life. (24x)

 

 

 

 

WAY:  Walking the Divine Path with the Divine Guide, down the Journey of Life. (derek-1870) is from darak, to tread with the feet, and denotes the act of walking. Way, ûrd Derech, from the same root, to proceed, go on, walk, tread. The way in which God goes in order to instruct and save man; the way in which man must tread in order to be safe, holy, and happy. Hence it is used of a going, or way, or journeying. The first occurrence is Genesis 3:24. It occurs in this Psalm thirteen times : verses 1, 3, 5, 14, 26, 27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 37, 59, 168.  God’s manner of acting or proceeding in providence and grace; and the way that man should take in order to answer the end of his creation and redemption.

TESTIMONIES: Listening to the Divine Witness testifying to the Truth that is sure & makes wise. (‘eduth-5713) .    twd[ Edoth, from d[ ad, denoting beyond, farther, all along, to bear witness, or testimony. twd[ eduth, from d[ ad, beyond, forward. The various types and appointments of the law, which refer to something beyondthemselves, and point forward to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. comes from the verb ‘to bear witness’: in his word God ‘bears witness’ to himself, his nature and his truth is from ‘ud, to turn back again, to go over again, to reiterate, hence, to testify. The first occurrence is Genesis 21:30 (edah). It occurs in this Psalm twenty-three times; nine times (‘eduth), verses 14, 31, 36, 88, 99, 111, 129, 144, 157; fourteen times (‘edah, feminine singular), verses 2, 22, 24, 46, 59, 79, 95, 119, 125, 138, 146, 152, 167, 168. TESTIMONY tells of the Divine witness to what God is, and what we should be. testimony. This word for the Word derives from the root “to bear witness.” It, so to speak, bears testimony to its Divine Author.  `Testimonies’ indicate God’s own declarations concerning His nature and purpose. Divine Witness. HIS SURE TESTIMONY MAKES WISE (v. 7b 5715 the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple) = The Word of God is THE DIVINE WITNESS:  God’s testimony absolutely trustworthy making us skilled in the art of holy living. The sure testimony—The Word does not change; it is sure and steadfast, Ps. 119:89. It is God’s testimony to man, His witness of what is true and right. See Matt. 5:18 The rites and ceremonies of the law; because they point out matters beyond themselves, being types and representations of the good things that were to come. Testimonymeans “meeting-place”; and so it refers to divine guidance or instruction within the Covenant. In his grace the all-wise God speaks at the level of the ordinary person. The best modern English for this is “injunctions”. The root meaning is “to bear witness”. If you bear witness to the Word of God by His Testimonies, then you are reflecting to your fellows the image of God. If you bear witness to the Word of God by His Testimonies, then you find happiness in obedience. If you bear witness to the Word of God by His Testimonies,  you are witnessing to the reality that God has a plan for your life; thus you now have no worries, because it is God who does all the worrying for you.  The testimony of the Lord (which witnesses for him to us) is sure,incontestably and inviolably sure, what we may give credit to, may rely upon, and may be confident it will not deceive us. It is a sure discovery of the divine truth, a sure direction in the way of duty. It is a sure foundation of living comforts and a sure foundation of lasting hopes. It is of use to make us wise, wise to salvation, 2 Tim. 3:15. TESTIMONY tells of the Divine witness to what God is, and what we should be.  SURE, reliable, worthy of being absolutely followed; It MAKES WISE the simple, giving practical guidance to the inexperienced.

PRECEPTS  Following the Divine Directions for Life that are right and cause great rejoicing. (pikkudim-6490) µydwqp pikkudim, from dqp pakad, he visited, cared, took notice of, appointed to a charge. The appointments, or charge delivered by God to man for his regard and observance. suggests applying the word of God to the minutiae of life    is from pakad, to take oversight or charge : hence, mandates enjoined on others. It occurs only in the Book of Psalms (see 19:8; 103:18; 111:7). In Psalm 119 twenty-one times : verses 4, 15, 27, 40, 45, 56, 63, 69, 78, 87, 93, 94, 100, 104, 110, 128, 134, 141, 159, 168, 173. 19:8 statutes. This synonym looks upon God’s Word as orders, charges, precepts, etc. They are viewed as the Governor’s governings. Precepts’ relate to man’s moral obligations as enjoined by God.  HIS RIGHT STATUTES REJOICES  (v. 8a 6490 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart) = The Word of God is THE DIVINE DIRECTIONS. God’s statutes giving directions to only secure  place in the universe, causing great joy because we know what is absolutely right. The right statutes—“Statutes” means “precepts, rules for daily living.” Some rules are wrong rules; God’s Word is right. Obeying the Word brings blessing to daily life. (6490) Precepts, µydwqp Pikkudim, from dqp pakad, to take notice or care of a thing, to attend, have respect to, to appoint, to visit; because they take notice of our way, have respect to the whole of our life and conversation, superintend, overlook, and visit us in all the concerns and duties of life. For thou hast commanded thy precepts. They are there, all ready made by the Living God. He has not just suggested that man should try them as one possible alternative. He has commanded us to keep them, and very diligently too.  Are right] µyry  yesharim, from ry yashar, to make straight, smooth, right, upright, opposed to crookedness in mind or conduct; showing what the man should be, both within and without. This is their character. STATUTE tells of Divine directions designed to secure obedience or check disobedience.  RIGHT, presenting the straight road to man’s true goal; It REJOICES the heart, bringing delight and pleasure to those who obey it.

COMMANDMENTS: Obeying the Divine Orders/Decrees of our Heavenly Captain that are perfectly pure and which enlightens our lives.  (mizvah-4687) is from zavah, to set up, constitute. Hence, constitutional commands. First occurrence Genesis 26:5. In Psalm 119 it occurs twenty-two times : verses 6, 10, 19, 21, 32, 35, 47, 48, 60, 66, 73, 86, 96 (singular), 98, 115, 127, 131, 143, 151, 166, 172, 176. COMMANDMENT tells of the Divine decrees, authoritative and imperious.  commandment. This word is related to the verb “to command” or “order.” The Word is therefore also perceived as divine orders. `Commandments’ are authoritative orders used as religious principles. Divine Captain and orders. HIS PURE COMMANDMENTS ENLIGHTENS  (v. 8b 4687the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes) = The Word of God is THE DIVINE DECREES: God’s commands giving a clear portrait of  God’s non-optional absolutes, without any flaw bringing light on every area. The pure commandment—See Pss. 12:6; 119:140; Prov. 30:5. Commandments, twxm Mitsvoth, from hwx tasvah to command, give orders, order, ordain; because they show us what we should do, and what we should leave undone, and exact our obedience. If any distinction is to be drawn practically between this word and the next, it is that command is the simple idea of ‘doing what you are told’. What God has orderedman to do, or not to do. What he has commanded, and what he has prohibited. Is pure] From hrb barah, to clear, cleanse, purify. All God’s commandments lead to purity, enjoin purity, and point out that sacrificial offering by which cleansing and purification are acquired. This is its character. Enlightening the eyes.] Showing men what they should do, and what they should avoid. It is by God’s commandments that we See the exceeding sinfulness of sin, and the necessity of redemption, so that we may love the Lord with all our heart, and our neighbour as ourselves. For this is the end of the commandment, and thus to enlighten the eyes is its use.  4687 COMMANDMENT tells of the Divine decrees, authoritative and imperious.  PURE, bright like the sun, clear, making duty plain; It ENLIGHTENS the eyes, illuminating the dark, and renewing the faint (I Samuel xiv. 27).

WORD: Reading the Divine Word to obtain the Will of God (‘imrah-565) is from ‘amar, to bring forth to light; hence, to say. The verb is very regularly followed by the words used; hence ‘imrah means an utterance and the purport of it. Not the same as dabar (No. x below), which refers to the articulate utterance of it. The first occurrence is in Genesis 4:23, and is rendered “speech“. In plural only once, Psalm 12:6 (the only place where the plural is found). In Psalm 119 it occurs nineteen times : videlicit, 11, 38, 41, 50, 58, 67, 76, 82, 103, 116, 123, 133, 140, 148, 158, 162, 170, 172. With dabar the two occur forty-two times. `Word’ is speech or utterance, a general word for the disclosure of God’s will. Divine Word revealing His will; (565) SPEECH hrma imrah, from rma amar, to branch out, spread, or diffuse itself, as the branches of a tree; and which is often used for a word spoken, a speech. This often occurs in the Psalm: and we regularly translate it word, and put no difference or distinction between it and rbd dabar, No. 8.: but it is not exactly the same; rbd  dabar may apply more properly to history, relation, description, and such like; while, ûtrma  imrathecha, thy word, may mean an immediate oracle, delivered solemnly from God to his prophet for the instruction of men. But the two words appear often indifferently used; and it would not be easy to ascertain the different shades of meaning between these two roots.[1] (565) His word, or saying, because it is the declaration of his mind, and Christ, the essential eternal Word, is all in all in it.

(torah-8451) is from yarah, to project, issue : hence, to point out, to show(Proverbs 6:13). Then, to instruct, teach. The Torah contains Jehovah’s Instructions to His People, pointing out to them His will. First occurrence is in Genesis 26:5 (plural). In Psalm 119 it occurs twenty-five times : always in the singular : videlicit verses 1, 18, 29, 34, 44, 51, 53, 55, 61, 70, 72, 77, 85, 92, 97, 109, 113, 126, 136, 142, 150, 153, 163, 165, 174. LAW tells of the Divine instruction relative to character and conduct.  19:7 law. This might better be translated, “His teaching,”  “a direction,” or “instruction” (cf. Ps. 1:2). “`Law’ is primarily instruction or teaching, then all of God’s revelation for life. Divine Teacher giving perfect instructions to restore and transform anything! HIS PERFECT LAW RESTORES (v. 7a 8451 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul)  = The Word of God is THE DIVINE TEACHER:  God’s truth that totally transforms, touching all of life, turning the whole person to God. See Ps. 119:128 and 160;   (8451) The Law, hrwt torah, from hry yarah, to direct, guide, teach, make straight, or even, point forward; because it guides, directs, and instructs in the way of righteousness; makes our path straight, shows what is even and right, and points us onward to peace, truth, and happiness. It is even our school-master to bring us to Christ, that we may be justified through faith; and by it is the knowledge of sin. The Law is perfect—of course, because it is the Word of God. It revives the soul, the nephesh, the whole of one’s person, or better, “gives life” to it. The Word that we meet in Christ also declares, “I came that people might have life and have it more abundantly.” law of the Lord; hrwt  torah, from hry  yarah, to instruct, direct, put straight, guide. It is God’s system of instruction, by which men are taught the knowledge of God and themselves, directed how to walk so as to please God, redeemed from crooked paths, and guided in the way everlasting. LAW tells of the Divine instruction relative to character and conduct.  PERFECT, without flaw or defect, lacking nothing; it RESTORES the soul, refreshing the inner life as food does the body.

JUDGMENT:  Building Life upon the Unchanging Decrees of God’s Divine Decisions that are always true & vindicates (Wm. Borden) changing jobs, changing weather, upgrading, latest edition, newest version… (mishpat-4941) is from shaphat, to set upright, erect(compare English right, and German richten and recht); hence, to judge. Mishpat means judgment. Its first occurrence is in Genesis 18:19 (in Jehovah’s mouth). In Psalm 119 it occurs twenty-three times (always in plural, except four times), videlicit, : verses 7, 13, 20, 30, 39, 43, 52, 62, 75, 84, 91 (ordinances), 102, 106, 108, 120, 121, 132 (as thou usest to do, see note), 137, 149, 156, 160, 164, 175. JUDGMENTS tell of the judicial decisions and sentences of Jehovah. judgments. This term looks upon God’s Word as conveying His judicial decisions. `Ordinances’ (also `judgments’) refer to legal pronouncements, rules of divine administration. HIS TRUE JUDGMENTS liberATE  (v. 9b 4941 the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether) = The Word of God is the Divine Decisions (REV.19).   THE DIVINE DECISIONS. God’s judgments, His final word on everything! Non-negotiable living. True, righteous judgments—God’s evaluations of men and things are true; He knows all things completely. It pays for the Christian to believe what God says and not to depend on his own evaluation. Lot made this mistake and lost everything.;   (4941) Judgments, µyjpm Mishpatim, from jp shaphat, to judge, determine, regulate, order, and discern, because they judge concerning our words and works; show the rulesby which they should be regulated; and cause us to discern what is right and wrong, and decide accordingly. (4941) God’s ordinances(verse 7) are the decisions of the divine Judge. They have to do with the everyday duties I shall be glad to perform. The word righteous, as we have seen in previous psalms, can also mean “victorious”. God’s ordinances, if obeyed in a person’s life, let him be effective in his relationship with other people, and thus live victoriously. But “keep a grip on me, Lord” (verse 8), he asks, “till I have learned how to obey you in this world with its many temptations.”[2] (4941)The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. The words of the Lord are true; that which is good in detail is excellent in the mass; no exception may be taken to a single clause separately, or to the book as a whole. God’s judgments need no laborious excuses to justify them. They commend themselves to every truthful mind; not only is their power invincible, but their justice is unimpeachable.[3] (4941) The judgments of the Lord (all his precepts, which are framed in infinite wisdom) are true; they are grounded upon the most sacred and unquestionable truths; they are righteous, all consonant to natural equity; and they are so altogether: there is no unrighteousness in any of them, but they are all of a piece.[4] (4941) His judgments, because framed in infinite wisdom, and because by them we must both judge and be judged.  Two words are used which affirm that this word expresses the mind of God: laws  The judgments of the Lord] µyjpm mishpatim, from tp shaphat, he judged, regulated, disposed, All God’s regulations, all his decisions; what he has pronounced to be right and proper. Are true] tma emeth, truth, from µa  am, to support, confirm, make stable, and certain. This is the character of God’s judgments. They shall all stand. All dispensations in providence and grace confirm them; they are certain, and have a fixed character. And righteous altogether.] They are not only according to truth; but they are righteous, wqdx tsadeku, they give to all their due. They show what belongs to God, to man, and to ourselves. And hence the word altogether, wdxy  yachdav, equally, is added; or truth and righteousness united.[5]  4941 JUDGMENTS tell of the judicial decisions and sentences of Jehovah.  TRUE, never false, ever faithful; t is VINDICATED altogether, the mutual parts explain and defend one another

RIGHTEOUSNESS/ RIGHT: Acting upon the Divine Righteousnessthat Balances all of Life  (zedek, masculine-6664), is from zadak, to be right, upright, just, righteous. Hence the noun means rightness. By comparing the first occurrence (Leviticus 19:15) with the second (Leviticus 19:36) we get the idea that the word has special reference to equal balancing. Zedek (masculine) occurs twelve times, and is rendered “righteousness“ : verses 123, 142 (second), 144, 172; “right“, verse 75 (margin righteousness); “righteous“ verses 7, 62, 106, 138, 160, 164; “justice“, verse 121. Zedakah (feminine), first occurrence, Genesis 15:6. In Psalm 119, “righteousness“, verses 40, 142 (first). Zaddik (adj.), spoken of a king (2 Samuel 23:3), once, in verse 137. The three words fifteen times in all. Divine Righteousness that balances life; (6664) Righteousness, hqdx Tsedakah from qdx tsadak, to do justice, to give full weight. That which teaches a man to give to all their due; to give God his due, man his due, and himself his due; for every man has duties to God, his neighbor, and himself, to perform. This word is applied to God’s judgments, testimonies, and commandments; they are all righteous, give to all their due, and require what is due from every one.  (6664) His righteousness, because it is all holy, just, and good, and the rule and standard of righteousness.

The noun = a decree or ordinance. First occurrence, Genesis 26:5 (hukkah feminine). STATUTE tells of Divine directions designed to secure obedience or check disobedience.  `Statutes’ refer elsewhere to civil and religious appointments of the Mosaic law. Divine Plans that contains God’s specifications for life! (2706) Statutes, µyqx Chukkim, from qx  chak, to mark, trace out, describe, and ordain; because they mark out our way describe the line of conduct we are to pursue and order or ordain what we are to observe. (2706) Statutes (verse 5) (Hebrew hoq) is a noun derived from the trade of the stone-mason. This is fearing God, lovingly acknowledging by my actions God sees me. Enduring forever. Filth brings decay, but cleanness is the great foe of corruption. The grace of God in the heart being a pure principle is also an abiding and incorruptible principle, which may be crushed for a time, but cannot be utterly destroyed. it will cleanse our way, Ps. 119:9. And it endureth for ever; it is of perpetual obligation and can never be repealed. The ceremonial law is long since done away, but the law concerning the fear of God is ever the same. TRUTH: Believing the Divine Truth from God that stabilizes all of life. (530) hnwma Emunah, from ÷ma aman, to make steady, constant, to settle, trust, believe. In Psalm 119 this word occurs in v. 30; 75; 86; 90; 138.The law that is established steady, confirmed, and ordered in all things, and sure; which should be believed on the authority of God, and trusted to as an infallible testimony from Him who cannot lie nor deceive. Faithfulness, hnwma emunah: nor does it appear in Ps 119:90, where it occurs, to be used as a characteristic of God’s law, but rather his exact fulfilment of his promises to man. BELIEVING THE TRUTH

NAME: Honoring the Divine Revelation from the Creator of the Universe. (8034) µ shem, see Ps 119:132: but this is no characteristic of God’s law; it refers here simply to himself. Those that love thy name is the same as those that love thee. Finally, mediation free Ezra to just ask the Lord for each area he needs to live fruitfully for the Lord. Remember Ezra faced a worldly congregation, soaked in all the worldly ways of Babylon and Persia. What was his plan to bring about lasting change in those he served? He started with his own life. He learned to point his heart frequently toward doing God’s Will.

 

 

So how do we adopt Ezra’s strategy? Here are so elements to practice getting alone with God.

• START WITH HIM: Try to spend at least 12 minutes each day in reading God’s Word and seeking to find one truth to hold on to all day long.

• SPEAK WITH HIM: From that time alone with God, think through your entire day. Ask HIM what would be the best use of your life for this day.

• STOP WITH HIM: Try to also get in the habit of a weekly time of evaluation. Just a half hour reflecting on where you are, and where you are headed in life and ministry.

• STAY WITH HIM: Finally, try one time of strategic planning each month, to truly reflect on life for a couple of hours. Take a spiritual retreat. Sit with a pad of paper, your calendar, and an open Bible. List your priorities for the next month. Pray over them, change them, decide upon them and then do them!

 

 

 

 

Meditation meant Ezra “prepared” Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had prepared (to establish, set up, accomplish, make firm; to direct toward (moral sense); to arrange, order) his heart to seek (to resort to, frequent (a place); to consult, to investigate, to ask for, require; to practice, study, follow) the Law of he Lord, and to do (to observe, celebrate, to acquire) it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.

 

The result? Psalm 119 is Ezra’s testimony and also probably the content of his teaching and preaching to the exiles that came home to seek the Lord in Jerusalem!

 

How did Ezra do this on a consistent basis? By meditation. Remember Meditation is a soul that thirsts and drinks of God in His Word; that longs for the waters of life and drinks them of God in His Word; that drinks from an ever present oasis in the arid, sun baked, lifeless deserts of life through finding and communing with God in His Word.

 

Seven times Ezra confesses his secret, it is called meditation (after finding God’s Word and eating it – then we digest or meditate upon it). Here is his pathway:

 

• PURIFYING MEDITATION PURIFIES OUR LIVES, look at v.9. Psalm 119:15 I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.
• ILLUMINATING MEDITATION ENCOURAGES OUR HEART – look at v. 18. Psalm 119:23 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.

• REFRESHING MEDITATION FOCUSES OUR LIFE – look at v. 25. Psalm 119:27 Make me understand the way of Your precepts; So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works.
• TESTIFYING MEDITATION DRAWS US TO God’s Word –  look at v. 46. Psalm 119:48 My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, Which I love, And I will meditate on Your statutes.
• REFINING MEDITATION HELPS US THROUGH TRIALS –  look at v.75. Psalm 119:78 Let the proud be ashamed, For they treated me wrongfully with falsehood; But I will meditate on Your precepts.
• focusING MEDITATION EDUCATES US IN TRUTH –  look at v. 101. Psalm 119:99  I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.

Ezra in Psalm 119 list of resolves “I have . . .”

 

Meditation is a soul that thirsts and drinks of God in His Word; that longs for the waters of life and drinks them of God in His Word; that drinks from an ever present oasis in the arid, sun baked, lifeless deserts of life through finding and communing with God in His Word.

 

So how did they do it? How were those with so little, able to live such godly lives in such a barren, inhospitable wilderness world? How did they live through so much trouble, hardship and adversity?

 

We must learn to discipline every part of our lives. Our time is one of the first that needs our attention as one gifted writer puts it:

 

If the[6] Christian is too busy to stop, take spiritual inventory, and receive his assignments from God, he becomes a slave to the tyranny of the urgent. He may work day and night to achieve much that seems significant to himself and others, but he will not finish the work God has for him to do.

 

One habit sets each of these apart from the rest of the world. They each practiced the Simple Discipline of Meditation. How did they do it? Were there keys books, seminars, tapes, study guides…no, they just grasped a truth from God and wouldn’t let go of it.

 

 

Meditation meant Enoch “walked “ Genesis 5:22, 24 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Who do you think was following whom? Do you really think that this means that a big glowing cloud of Shekinah glory tailed Enoch? I don’t think so. Actually it means that God was invited into every part of Enoch’s life. All day long at every meeting, every stop, every call, every situation – The Lord Himself was a part of it all. Has the Lord been invited into every part of your life?

 

Meditation meant Noah “did” Genesis 6:22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did. What God had said — Noah remembered. What God had said — Noah kept thinking about. What God had said — Noah obediently did! Have you remembered, thought about, and acted upon THE LAST TRUTH YOU LEARNED when God spoke to you (through the voices of His apostles and prophets in God’s Word)? Were you listening to God or just reading?

 

Meditation meant Job “feared” Job 1:8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns (turns away; puts aside; departs from) evil?”  Job knew what God wanted and did it. Job knew what God hated and avoided it. Job knew God was watching and acted like it. Have you found and done that from God’s Word

 

Meditation meant Abraham ‘built” Genesis 12:7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built (established; constructed) an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. Abraham marked out reminders of what God had revealed to him. Abraham wanted to remember what God said. He made special time consuming efforts to never forget what God has done, what God had promised, what God expected. Altars marked the big events of his walk with the Lord. Do you listen and mark clearly God’s plans for you. Are you remembering or forgetting?

 

Meditation meant Moses “sought” Exodus 33:13 Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” Moses knew the Lord because he sought the Lord. God told him ‘you will seek and find Me when you seek with (what) ALL your heart’. And Moses did seek with all his heart to know the Lord. And Moses did find and know the Lord like no one else. God sits day after day ready to speak to you and me as long as we will listen. Just pick up the receiver, open the cover, turn your eyes onto the pages of God’s Word and hear His voice. Are you seeking Him with ALL your heart?

 

Meditation meant Joshua “stayed” Exodus 33:11 So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle. Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 24:15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua stayed on with the Lord. He loved to hang around the Tent of Meeting with God. He loved God’s Word to stay on his mind and in his mouth. And he purposed that no matter what any other family did, his was staying faithful to the Lord. Now that resolve only was possible because of the first two. Are you lingering in God’s presence as He opens His Word to you? Are God’s Words stuck to your heart, your mind, your mouth? That is what the Lord wants!

 

Meditation meant Ruth “clung” Ruth 1:16-17 But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. 17 Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.” Ruth was going to hang on for dear life. She found the truth. She met the God of Heaven. Everything else – family, friends, future – everything else peeled away. One thing stayed – the revelation of God. That was what she clung to, sought for, and wouldn’t give up – for anything. Is there any doubt why God made her the great –grandmother of the Man after God’s own heart David? I guess we can say as the New Testament says Jesus is the son of David. And if so then Jesus is the great-great grandson of Ruth. Just think what unbelievable things God will do with you if you decide today to cling to Him.

 

Meditation meant Hannah “immersed” – in prayer :1 Samuel 1:10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish; and in the Word (she quotes 6 Old Testament passages in one prayer quoting from Job 36; Exodus 15; Deuteronomy 4, 8, and 32 twice)  1 Samuel 2:1-10 And Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord; My horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation.

• 2 “No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God. Exodus 15:11 “Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders? Deuteronomy 4:35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.  Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.
• 6 “The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up. Deuteronomy 32:39 ‘Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
• 7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. Deuteronomy 8:17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’
• 8 He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. “For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, And He has set the world upon them. Job 36:7 He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous; But they are on the throne with kings, For He has seated them forever, And they are exalted. Job 38:4-6 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,
• 9 He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. “For by strength no man shall prevail.
• 10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of His anointed.”

 

Here is a woman in a difficult home situation, far from spiritual help, missing out on the greatest joys of life because she was childless – and she channels all that potential grief and self-pity into seeking God. Here is a woman with limited resources, limited time, limited exposure to God’s Word who immerses herself in God. She seeks for and gets 7 verses and meditates on them so long that they spill out into her prayers. And beyong that, the truth she discovers by her meditation is captured by the Spirit of God and recorded in God’s Word. And this woman who immersed herself in God in the Old Testament become the role model, hero, and mentor of the greatest woman of the Bible – Mary mother of Jesus. In Luke it is Mary who quotes Hannah who quotes her meditations upon God in prayer. Are you immersing yourself in God’s Word? Are they spilling from your life?

 

Meditation meant David “seeks longingly” Psalm 63:1-2 O God, You are my God; Early will I seek (to seek early or earnestly, look early or diligently for) You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs (to long for, faint, faint with longing; The word[7] seems to mean “has gone blind”, or “gone dark”. How vivid Hebrew poetry is! Then seek is a most revealing verb. Basically it means longing for the first light of the dawn. ) for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. 2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.

 

Meditation meant Elijah “listened” 1 Kings 19:12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

 

 

Meditation meant Daniel “purposed” Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed (to put in place, set, appoint, make; to direct toward; to establish, determine, fix, to bring to pass) in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

 

Often however we don’t hear the voice of the Lord in His Word because our lives are too full and too complex. One of the best ways to experience the discipline of meditation – and the immense rewards that it will bring to our lives, is to practice a spiritual fast.

 

In front of an open Bible. A modern spiritual Goliath was George Mueller. His life may be distilled down to these words he wrote in a diary:

It has[8] pleased the Lord to teach me a truth, the benefit of which I have not lost for more than 14 years. The point is this: I saw more clearly than ever that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord. The first thing to be concerned about was not how much I might serve the Lord, or how I might glorify the Lord; but how I might get my soul into a happy state, and how my inner man might be nourished…Before this time my practice had been, at least for ten years previously, as a habitual thing, to give myself to prayer in the morning. Now I saw that the most important thing I had to do was to give myself to the reading of the Word of God, and to the meditation on it, that thus my heart might be comforted, encouraged, warned, reproved and instructed; and that thus, by means of the Word of God, while meditating on it, my heart might be brought into experimental communion with the Lord.

 

Getting alone with God can be at any time: Don’t let your schedule hold you back. Jesus doesn’t teach us about the times of prayer – because we are to pray at all times.  In the Bible, people got alone with God at all different times:

ü  God asked those who were His personal representatives, the priests, to get alone with Him every evening and every morning 1 Chronicles 23:30 to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening;

ü  Daniel — one of the busiest administrators of the Old Testament, was also a towering giants among the Old Testament saints. The key to his life from just a teenager? He was in the habit of getting alone with God three times a day.  Daniel 6:10  Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.

ü  The Psalmist says we should get alone with our Great God today.  Psalm 95:6, 8 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: 8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

ü  Jeremiah confesses he had learned to get alone with God in his youthJeremiah 3:4 Will you not from this time cry to Me, ‘My Father, You are the guide of my youth?

ü  Moses said a good time to remember to get alone with God is after enjoying the bounties of a good meal Deuteronomy 8:10 When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.

 

don’t let your troubles hold you back from getting alone with god.  Jesus doesn’t teach us about the circumstances of solitude – because any circumstance will do as a place to get alone with God.  In the Bible, people are seen getting alone with God in all kinds of circumstances:

 

ü  When Jesus was so burdened that He was loudly crying He got alone with God in Gethsemane. Hebrews 5:7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,

ü  When Job was so incapacitated that he had to resort to sitting in ashes, and shaving his head for painful sores, he learned even there he could get alone with God (Job 1:20-21; 2:8). Job 1:20-21 Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
