The Discipline of the Scriptures
Read the Word
Memorize the Word
Meditate on the Word
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
—Matthew 4:4

As we have just seen in Revelation 10:8-11, Jesus shows the way to God, and the way to God is eating His Word. I pray that you can joyfully identify with Jeremiah in this verse: Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart … (Jeremiah 15:16). His passion for God and His Word was consistently, and relentlessly, demonstrated throughout his life as God’s prophet.
Wouldn’t you like to capture that same passion in your own life? It all starts by disciplining yourself to spend time listening to God speak to you! To help you start cultivating such a time with the Lord, let’s look at three areas of spiritual discipline: (1) reading God’s Word; (2) memorizing God’s Word; and (3) meditating upon God’s Word.
