SUFFICIENCY OF THE SCRIPTURES PART TWO

II TIMOTHY 3:16

The greatest man who ever lived or will ever live is the Lord Jesus Christ. He stands monumentally in perfection against the deplorable backdrop of fallen and depraved humanity.

God became man, unique and all-powerful authority.

The historian Philip Schaff (The Person of Christ), American Tract Society, 1913) vividly describes its uniqueness along with its Savior: “This Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science and learning, He shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of schools, He spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, He set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.”

His present influence is no less amazing.

Kenneth Scott Latourette (A History of Christianity, Harper and Row, 1953), former Yale historian, says: “It is evidence of his importance, of the effect that he has had upon history and presumably, of the baffling mystery of his being that no other life ever lived on this planet has evoked so huge a volume of literature among so many peoples and languages, and that, far from ebbing, the flood continues to mount.” 28/44

And what did He have to say?

Christ believed and demonstrated that Scriptures were sufficient t know – Origin Divine Creation Purpose Meaning of Life Destiny Plan of Ages & Beyond

In them, He taught we can find – Hope of Resurrection Peace in Affliction Joy In Daily Living

He pointed out –

Purpose In Handicap & Disease Triumph Out Of Death Restoration Inspite of Defeat

But He fearlessly confronted any who would not submit.

Christ looked upon and acted as if Scriptures divine.

It was the – Only Way To God Only Source Truth Only Entrance To Life

It was the Supreme Court for any questions or appeal

It flowed from His lips – As He prayed. As He preached. As He prophesied future. As He taught. As He comforted and healed.

He believed it was literal as in – Adam & Eve & Creation Noah & Flood Satan & Demons Moses & Miracles Jonah & Fish And On And On

He affirmed the entire Old Testament, all 39 books.

He promised it would be completed by the Holy Spirit through His apostles.

So what’s the final aspect to the Lord Jesus Christ and authority of Scripture?

Not only did He – • Say they were divinely authoritative. • Use them as divine authority. • Follow them as such. • Stand against any who added and voided truth – subtracted • and ignored in unbelief.

He finally – 5. Made Scripture priority of His apostles.

Look at John 14:26 – He promised to bring to their memories not only the events, but His very words.

Did they believe Him? Let’s look over shoulders as writing: 1. Peter (1 Peter l:22-25) and Paul (I Thess. 2:13). Stated their message was – Word of God. 2. John (1 John 1-4) said he wrote what witnessed and it was for all times.

3. They commanded their words to have equal standing with Old Testament. Col. 4:16; I Thess. 5:27; Rev. 1:3 4. They said given by Holy Spirit (I Corin. 2:13). 5. Commanded by Lord – 2 Thess. 3:6-15 and 1 Corin. 14:37. 6. They taught that orthodoxy only measured by submissive adherence to their teaching. I John 4:6; 2 John 9-10; 3 John 9-10
