The First Century was a time of confusion.  The Eastern “Mystery Religions” of Isis, Serapsis, Semaramis, Cybelle and Mithras were flooding the Empire.  These religions and Gnosticism taught a secret initiation that only a special leader could give was needed.  Dark chamber, deep underground, flickering torch light robed initiates taken, secrets whispered and induction made often with orgy of sex or sacrifice.

 

Then initiated into secret.  *That’s Paganism!

The ancient world knew of secret initiatory pagan anointing into special knowledge.

Old Testament truth taught that the Holy Spirit used anointing oil when He anointed prophets, priests, and kings.

In Greek the adjective is anointed. (substantive anointed Christ)

 

In Greek the noun signified

1. Very life of Christ among men
2. Second edition Christ
3. Christ ones united with Him

UNION WITH CHRIST COMES AT SALVATION AND TO ETERNITY

 

It is the moment by moment communion that is so hard.  Note John’s priorities:
