Christ’s Return Revelation 19:11-21

The climax of all human history is now unfolded in our text. The purposes of God long hidden in His eternal counsels are now made clear. Jesus steps back into history, no longer the suffering servant, He is Lord of All. This passage makes two truths remarkably vivid. They are:

1. The Absolute Security of Trusting the Power of Jesus. Rev. 19:11-16 2. The Absolute Futility of Resisting the Power of Jesus. Rev. 19:17-21

Look closely as God pulls back the veil and reveals the awesome majesty of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords in all His glory. As we look at each facet of His wondrous character let your heart rest in the security that comes of trusting in Him.

The Absolute Security of Trusting the Power of Jesus. Rev. 19:11-16

v. 11 Trust in His Truth Revelation Ā 19:11 Ā  Ā I Ā saw Ā heaven Ā standing Ā open Ā and Ā there Ā  before Ā me Ā was Ā a Ā white Ā horse, Ā whose Ā rider Ā is Ā called Ā  Faithful Ā and Ā True. Ā With Ā justice Ā he Ā judges Ā and Ā makes Ā  war. Ā (NIV) Ā  Ā  Christ now returns with His saints. He came for them in
Rev.4:1. During all of human history He has been watching and waiting. Nothing has missed His eyes. Now He will begin to bring truth to bear upon all lies and falsehoods and deception: He will execute vengeance, so wait on Him. Jude Ā 15 Ā 15 Ā to Ā judge Ā everyone, Ā and Ā to Ā convict Ā all Ā  the Ā ungodly Ā of Ā all Ā the Ā ungodly Ā acts Ā they Ā have Ā  done Ā in Ā the Ā ungodly Ā way, Ā and Ā of Ā all Ā the Ā harsh Ā  words Ā ungodly Ā sinners Ā have Ā spoken Ā against Ā  him.” Ā (NIV) Ā  2 Ā Peter Ā 2:9 Ā 9 Ā if Ā this Ā is Ā so, Ā then Ā the Ā Lord Ā knows Ā  how Ā to Ā rescue Ā godly Ā men Ā from Ā trials Ā and Ā to Ā hold Ā  the Ā unrighteous Ā for Ā the Ā day Ā of Ā judgment, Ā while Ā  continuing Ā their Ā punishment. Ā (NIV) Ā  He will repay evil, so trust Him. Hebrews Ā 10:30 Ā 30 Ā For Ā we Ā know Ā him Ā who Ā said, Ā “It Ā  is Ā mine Ā to Ā avenge; Ā I Ā will Ā repay,” Ā and Ā again, Ā “The Ā  Lord Ā will Ā judge Ā his Ā people.” Ā (NIV) Ā  He will vindicate the oppressed, so hope in Him. Psalm Ā 103:6 Ā 6 Ā  Ā The Ā LORD Ā works Ā righteousness Ā  and Ā justice Ā for Ā all Ā the Ā oppressed. Ā (NIV) Ā  Psalm Ā 9:9 Ā 9 Ā  Ā The Ā LORD Ā also Ā will Ā be Ā a Ā refuge Ā for Ā  the Ā oppressed, Ā A Ā refuge Ā in Ā times Ā of Ā trouble. Ā  (NKJV) Ā He will reward the righteous, so work For Him. Psalm Ā 58:11 Ā 11 Ā  Ā So Ā that Ā men Ā will Ā say, Ā “Surely Ā there Ā  is Ā a Ā reward Ā for Ā the Ā righteous; Ā Surely Ā He Ā is Ā God Ā  who Ā judges Ā in Ā the Ā earth.” Ā (NKJV) Ā  Matthew Ā 5:12 Ā 12 Ā “Rejoice Ā and Ā be Ā exceedingly Ā  glad, Ā for Ā great Ā is Ā your Ā reward Ā in Ā heaven, Ā for Ā so Ā  they Ā persecuted Ā the Ā prophets Ā who Ā were Ā before Ā  you. Ā (NKJV) Ā   ⇒ Are all your sadnesses, anxieties and woes poured out on Him? Only Jesus can give us the rest and peace that

all will be well in Him.

v. 12 Trust in His Intimacy Revelation Ā 19:12 Ā 12 Ā His Ā eyes Ā are Ā like Ā blazing Ā fire, Ā and Ā on Ā  his Ā head Ā are Ā many Ā crowns. Ā He Ā has Ā a Ā name Ā written Ā on Ā  him Ā that Ā no Ā one Ā knows Ā but Ā he Ā himself. Ā (NIV) Ā  Remember what salvation is: John Ā 17:3 Ā 3 Ā “And Ā this Ā is Ā eternal Ā life, Ā that Ā they Ā may Ā know Ā  You, Ā the Ā only Ā true Ā God, Ā and Ā Jesus Ā Christ Ā whom Ā You Ā have Ā  sent. Ā (NKJV) Ā  John Ā 10:27 Ā  Ā “My Ā sheep Ā hear Ā My Ā voice, Ā and Ā I Ā know Ā them, Ā  and Ā they Ā follow Ā Me. Ā (NKJV) Ā  ⇒ Do you know Him personally? Do you enjoy talking with Him? How about reading His letters to you, are they at the top of your pile? What do you know of Jesus that only comes by long hours shared?

v. 13 Trust in His Redemption Revelation Ā 19:13 Ā 13 Ā He Ā is Ā dressed Ā in Ā a Ā robe Ā dipped Ā in Ā  blood, Ā and Ā his Ā name Ā is Ā the Ā Word Ā of Ā God. Ā (NIV) Ā  The blood of Christ is the scarlet thread that ties al of the Word into one. It is in His shed blood that we hope. Ephesians Ā 1:7 Ā  Ā In Ā Him Ā we Ā have Ā redemption Ā through Ā His Ā  blood, Ā the Ā forgiveness Ā of Ā sins, Ā according Ā to Ā the Ā riches Ā of Ā  His Ā grace Ā (NKJV) Ā  1 Ā John Ā 1:7 Ā But Ā if Ā we Ā walk Ā in Ā the Ā light Ā as Ā He Ā is Ā in Ā the Ā light, Ā  we Ā have Ā fellowship Ā with Ā one Ā another, Ā and Ā the Ā blood Ā of Ā  Jesus Ā Christ Ā His Ā Son Ā cleanses Ā us Ā from Ā all Ā sin. Ā (NKJV) Ā  Revelation Ā 1:5 Ā  Ā and Ā from Ā Jesus Ā Christ, Ā the Ā faithful Ā  witness, Ā the Ā firstborn Ā from Ā the Ā dead, Ā and Ā the Ā ruler Ā over Ā  the Ā kings Ā of Ā the Ā earth. Ā To Ā Him Ā who Ā loved Ā us Ā and Ā washed Ā  us Ā from Ā our Ā sins Ā in Ā His Ā own Ā blood, Ā (NKJV) Ā  ⇒ What are you holding onto to get you to God? Is it
simply the sacrifice of Jesus for you? Is it only that He died in your place, shedding His blood? Is it all that He did and only that you trust His redeeming blood? ************************************************* v. 14 Trust in His Faithfulness Revelation Ā 19:14 Ā 14 Ā The Ā armies Ā of Ā heaven Ā were Ā  following Ā him, Ā riding Ā on Ā white Ā horses Ā and Ā dressed Ā in Ā  fine Ā linen, Ā white Ā and Ā clean. Ā (NIV) Ā  Not one of the members of His armies are lost, missing, awol. He has and always will faithfully cared for them through sickness, health, adversity, prosperity, loneliness and joy. He is Faithful. The very character of God is that of Faithfulness. 1 Ā Corinthians Ā 1:9 Ā  Ā God Ā is Ā faithful, Ā by Ā whom Ā you Ā were Ā  called Ā into Ā the Ā fellowship Ā of Ā His Ā Son, Ā Jesus Ā Christ Ā our Ā  Lord. Ā (NKJV) Ā  1 Ā Thessalonians Ā 5:24 Ā  Ā He Ā who Ā calls Ā you Ā is Ā faithful, Ā who Ā  also Ā will Ā do Ā it. Ā (NKJV) Ā  2 Ā Thessalonians Ā 3:3 Ā But Ā the Ā Lord Ā is Ā faithful, Ā who Ā will Ā  establish Ā you Ā and Ā guard Ā you Ā from Ā the Ā evil Ā one. Ā (NKJV) Ā  1 Ā Peter Ā 4:19 Ā  Ā Therefore Ā let Ā those Ā who Ā suffer Ā according Ā  to Ā the Ā will Ā of Ā God Ā commit Ā their Ā souls Ā to Ā Him Ā in Ā doing Ā  good, Ā as Ā to Ā a Ā faithful Ā Creator. Ā (NKJV) Ā  ⇒ Are you resting in His faithful provision for your needs right now? Are you confident in any adversity that God is above all and working through it His glory? How about your health, is it in His Faithful hands? Your children, marital hopes, child bearing desires, college dreams — are they all given to the Faithful One?

v. 15 Trust in His Judgement Revelation Ā 19:15 Ā 15 Ā Out Ā of Ā his Ā mouth Ā comes Ā a Ā sharp Ā  sword Ā with Ā which Ā to Ā strike Ā down Ā the Ā nations. Ā “He Ā will Ā  rule Ā them Ā with Ā an Ā iron Ā scepter.” Ā He Ā treads Ā the

winepress Ā of Ā the Ā fury Ā of Ā the Ā wrath Ā of Ā God Ā Almighty. Ā  (NIV) Ā  Judgment is a ā€œcompression into a sudden flash the inevitable results of wrong doing.ā€ 1 As the Red Sea for Pharaoh was the demonstration of the danger to any human power that defies the Supreme power of God. So the judgment on Sodom was about those who trifle with sexual promiscuity, and the judgment of Babylon about the overthrow God gives to nations that trivialize the value of human life.

v. 16 Trust in His Authority Revelation Ā 19:16 Ā 16 Ā On Ā his Ā robe Ā and Ā on Ā his Ā thigh Ā he Ā has Ā  this Ā name Ā written: Ā KING Ā OF Ā KINGS Ā AND Ā LORD Ā OF Ā  LORDS. Ā (NIV)
The Absolute Futility of Resisting the Power of Jesus. Rev. 19:17-21

Why does the Lord give such a horribly graphic view of these His enemies? To remind us of the Absolute Futility of Resisting the Power of Jesus. What should be our response? Look back at verse 10. There are two gems: 1. Worship God. 2. See Jesus. How are we to do this? Simply as His Word has instructed us:

• Focus on the reverent presentation of all we have to God as Rom 12.1-2 says is our spiritual worship.

1 F. B. Meyer, Exodus, p. 133.
• Let Jesus show Himself to you in every page of His book as He did to the two on the road to Emmaus in Lk. 24;27-31 and I Peter 1.10-11.
